Thoughts and Dreams of a Labruskie

All About An Indi Dog

I'm a Husky/Retriever Cross with a quizical expression.(Does that make me a Labruskie or a Husktriever) I came to live with my owners from Manchester on 24 November 2008. My family is two humans B & P, assorted wildlife, extended family humans and lots and lots of fish!!

Welcome to My World

Welcome to my New Site - I hope you like it! Keep up to date with all my adventures or check out my rated walkies suggestions If you would like to leave me a message please remember it doesn't appear right away as I have to do something called moderating - it is a bit like chewing - to make sure nothing in your comments will be worrying to a little pup!

Swimming Lessons

Today P's brother from Liverpool is staying over. So being a naughty puppy I thought he needed to get up early and so jumped on him whilst he was snoozing in bed and licked him 'til he woke up! Hee hee it was funny seeing him jump awake.

As a treat we all went off to Cuerdon Valley for a nice walk. It was a nice day for getting muddy! Slutching in mud is quite the most glorious thing a growing puppy can do. Any of my doggie friends agree? Chasing smells through the trees, and more wallowing in glorious mud as well as the obligitory stick chewing and carrying. Even met a bigger doggie who tried to pinch mine but I got it back. The poor retriever did get told off by his owner.

One stick that was thrown went into the stream, so I dived in head first! My head went right under and I got a little scared because I couldn't scramble out where I had jumped in. Poor P had to come and rescue me - despite pulling me out by my collar as he could only just reach me without going in himself I still soaked him, when I shook myself dry, hee hee what a naughty pup I am! Guess what? I did the same stupid thing at the same place and P came to my rescue again, he is a good pack leader to this poor hapless puppling! Still soaked him though with my shaking dry. Why dont humans do the same thing to dry themselves, beats me?

Anyway, all wasn't lost as P was pleased that all my mud had washed off - that saved me from another bath. Gosh I am tired this evening after my walk and 'swim'. Guess I'll have to learn how to doggy paddle now if I'm going to go diving in, it might come in handy for my holidays by the seaside.

Anyway bedtime I think lots more adventures tomorrow I suppose.

Moody Teens

Well it had to happen I guess, woke up one morning a couple of days ago and I was not my usual happy self instead I feels all moody with the urge to sigh when I am told to do someting - infact I have to say I sigh quite alot, at being told to come in, told to get down off things, told not to bring sticks into the house . . . I dont know there are just too many rules man!

I am also in trouble quite a lot (not just for sighing) but for being wild in the garden, so far there are two holes in the lawn, three in the flower beds and lots of good chewing in the ponds!

B says I need some focus so I have decided as an adolesent pup to start a collection - I thought long and hard about what to collect and have decided upon Sticks! I have a growing collection in the backgarden which I have carried home from Growley Wood walks - there are long thin ones, long fat ones and even some short ones - it is quite a collection and I am very proud of it

But I have to say as well as being all moody and independant I do rather still like my cuddles!!

Off to woof at nothing - just to see if I can get someone to come and look ;)

Catch Up Edition - Puppy Times

Been a busy couple of days - first Friday evening I went round to Auntie Ellie's for tea and guess what Lily was there - we had a great time - went over the fields for some Ball chucker fun and then after tea B. Lily and Me played my fave game of doggy Hide and Seek.

Saturday well that was a surprise I forgot I dont go to Puppy class anymore so when we turned away from Standish I did look quizzically out the window. I was actually destined to go and stay at Uncle Keith's for the day as B and P were going to see Mary Poppins with Lily - not sure who Mary Poppins is but apparently she doesn't like Doggies so I stayed with Keith. We had a great time playing in the morning and then what a treat Bailey, Amber and Ben came to pick me up and we went for a walk to formby - it was a bit of tight squeeze in the car - three humans, two labradors, terrier and me in a little car but it was well worth it - two hours of doggy fun with sticks and sand and other pupplings! When we came back me and keith had a snooze.

B & P came to pick me up after tea - they had had a loverly day too - I climbed up on B's knee and had a big snuggle - it is nice to visit with other people but I think I like my humans bestest.

I had my second night of free sleeping last night too - I dont have my cage door shut now so can stretch out while snoozing - so far I haven't felt the need to chew the kitchen chairs!!

Having a quiet day today as B is working and P has gone off to shoot people in the woods - so just playing with my chewy and toys - if the rain goes off later B says we will go somewhere for a walkie - otherwise it will be a little local walkie - so paws crossed it clears up.

Off to watch dog TV out the window, practice husky howling at passers by (or blowing leaves) and wonder what time lunch is - rummbly doggie tummy this morning

Bolton Abbey

Walkie Location: Bolton Abbey Yorkshire (just!) Great Print your own Maps

Human Considerations: Now Car Parking is not cheap - £5.50 whether you stop for and hour or a day - so bring a picnic and make a day of it. (if you go mid week in the winter it is free) On the plus side they do invest this money in the walks and they are all well maintained. It gets very busy in the summer but in the winter if you wrap up warm it is a very beautiful place to walk. There is a cafe which does both hot drinks and food - but at a price! there is also a gift shop. Pay at one of the three car parks and you get free parking at any of the other two. There are NO! poo bins other than the car park so be prepared to carry. They have upgraded the paths along the river for disabled and buggy access so now you can get almost to the Strid in relative ease. Please note you can no longer go to the Valley of Desolation if you have a doggy in tow - plus they request you keep them on a lead if you walk the narrow woodland paths

Doggy Thoughts: WoW WoW WOW I LOVE this place - What is not to love - there is a great river to paddle and 'look' at ducks - there is a field that pretends to be a carpark with fenced off middle parts so you can play even when it is full. There are FAB walks in every direction as far as a furry eye can see and ok you have to be on your lead for some of them but hey ho!!! Doggies are even welcome at the cafe so long as you sit out side so you can sit and watch the ducks at play while the humans have a hot drink. I think my fave bit was when B and I walked across the 'ford' P didn't want to get his feet wet but me and B were game! I quite fancied the stepping stones over the river too but B said the river was too fast if I fell in and she drew the line at swimming as it was snowy the day we went.

I am keeping my paws crossed that we go here again soon!!

Ball Chucker Points: It has to be my first ever 6 out of 6 award

Busy Day for a Shattered pup!

What a day - First I graduated form Puppy Class then as a special treat B, P and little old me! went for a picnic to a Place called Bolton Abbey in Yorkshire and guess what there was SNOW!!!!!! I had a great time playing and running around in it

I had a really important Job to do and had to carry the lunch on our walk - lots of people stopped to admire me in my smart backpack! When we had been on our walk we had a picnic - which is what you call eating outside apparently - I really liked it and as a special treat I was allowed to have some cucumber after I had finished my dinner!

After dinner we had some serious play time in the snow and I was able to wash all the mud off - I am such a tired pup tonight - big sleeps for me!!!

Last Day at School

As of this morning I am no longer attending Puppy Class as my 6 whole weeks of lessons are over! Whatever will I do with my Saturday Mornings now!!!

Had a great time paying with Archie and Gizmo - will really miss you guys! and we even went and did our recall practise in a big field - all did really well considering we were out in the rain and with the smell of wet grass and freedom in our noses - no one made a break for it!!

P took some pictures of my friends so I could put them on the blog - hope you enjoy!

Labruskie At Work

Now I have a new thing - it is called a backpack and apparently I am going to be helping carry picnics and stuff on holiday walks - not sure what a holiday is but if there is food and walks involved count me in I say. So last night I proudly carried two cans of soup round on my evening walk. Wearing a back pack is not bad really - except it feels funny when I shake and B & P are even less keen on my deep wading through puddles!! and I am now wondering if food gets packed in it can I chew a hole through it to get to it with out any one noticing? Such things occupy a Labruskie pups thoughts!

Apparently if the weather is ok we are going to go for a nice walk on Saturday and I can try out carrying my first lunch - which will be exciting!

On a slightly different note - I am in disgrace tonight - have been most of the day to be honest - B was on a phone call and so I was playing in the garden - I thought the plants in the pond looked interesting and before I knew it was a little bit wet, so I thought I would dry myself off in the flower beds - this apparently was a bad idea as I was unceremoniously dumped in the bath and vigerously washed and wrapped in a towel till I dried. This meant that I missed my afternoon Walkie, but B can't be too cross cos I got taken an extra long one this evening with Ball chucker action and stick carrying. Mind who could stay cross at a little pup like me?
Lick Ya laters off to watch the footie with P

Oops a Daisy

Am slightly in the dog house this evening - if you will pardon the pun - B & I were having a bit of a play when I accidentally bumped her on the nose - now she has a big lump and a headache and I have no more game!

Been an ok day today - I like the weekend as I have both B & P to take me walkies and we go further than normal. Take this morning we set off down Upper Growley wood - well me and P did - B went up Puddle lane as they were playing with the new gadgets P brought home - I am learning that P often brings home gadgets!

Then we went through the wood with No name and guess what on the otherside was another road. We sat on a handy bench and I sat nicely while two horses trotted past - gosh they are big! we followed the lane up and found a nice path across a big field (need to bring the Ball Chucker next time please!) after we jumped a stream we ended up on Ball Chucker Mountain - excellent walkie guys - now I need to work on my local map and add in a few more paths!

Then B&P went out to the shops and guess what I have a a new big boy Kong just like Ellie's and a special backpack so when we go on walks on holiday I can carry my own snacks and things.

This evening it has been snowing so , before the bumped nose situation , B and me went out in the garden and had fun playing with snowballs - I really like the snow!

Off to chew my new Kong and give B an I am sorry lick on the nose!

Saturday Fun

Gosh my paws are steaming tonight I have had such a busy day. First I got P & B up nice and early (5am isn't too early is it?) then it was Puppy Class day - saw Little Archie and Gizmo - poor Smudge had the tummy bug so he wasn't there today :(

At Puppy class we did lots of sit and stay, and had to be good while our humans learnt all about brushing us and checking our coats and feet and teeth etc. Naturally I was very good and lay on my back while B did all the checks - some of the other doggies didn't like being looked at but I am used to it as B & P always do these checks on me.

After puppy class B did some jobs and then we went and picked up her Mum and we went on a great walkie to Cuerden Valley - check out my Walkies section - it was great fun especially when I christened B's new coat - well it was lacking in paw prints - and made her Mum's coat look a bit more lived in. We had a great walk and met lots of new doggies! B lost both my ball chucker balls though - oops.

I was ever such a good boy!

I am learning all about whistles this evening - I get a treat or my tea when it gets blown so I am already quite interested in it!

Off to see if I can con any more treats out of P - he was out of the room when B gave me some so maybe he wont realise - well a dog can try!

Cuerden Valley Park

Walkie Location: Cuerden Valley - Leyland

Human Considerations: There are serveral car parks to choose from - all free and well maintained. The footpaths are tarmac'd so it is up to you whether you want to get muddy. Lots of footpaths, doggy bins and even a cafe

Doggy Thoughts: I love this place - apparently it is one of Bailey's fav walkies too. It has everything a doggy can ask for. We park in the leyland car park and so walk up and over the motorway bridge to enter the park, then we have lots of paths to choose from - we can go down the main path to the river, or wander through the little paths that meander through the woods, there is even a little walled lane I like to run down. For doggies this place is heaven, there are woods, fields and nice clean river to paddle in - a ford to paddle in if like me you are worried about going too deep - or deep pools if you would rather a bit of swimming. There are also lots of slutchy mud wallows to play in.

Ball Chucker Points:

Poorley Pup

I am feeling Very very sorry for myself tonight - I have this tummy bug that is going round doggies at the moment so have been to the vets to get some medicine and had to have a nasty injection :(

I would also like to lodge a complaint against management - I have had no tea this evening and apparently I wont be getting any breakfast tomorrow either. I would like it noted that I feel I could eat something about now so come on I wont tell the vet if you don't - pass us a little bit of dinner - I am passing out here with hunger!!!

Snowy Paws

Hurrah it snowed! Had a great day yesterday - first me and Ellie and B and P went for a walk round Growley Woods for some ball chucker action and some snow fun - it was really really good fun! I am not sure what it is about snow but it makes my paws and my nose tingle and I just want to bounce! Even Ellie managed a bounce or too - we love SNOW!!!

Then B & P and I went for a road trip while Ellie went to stay with Auntie Joan. We went ever such a long way to somewhere called Shrewsbury and had a really fun walk there in a Blizzard - I am not sure who was the most covered in snow!! Check out my walkies to see where we went!

Battle of Shrewsbury Historical Walkie

Walkie Location: Battle Of Shrewsbury Historical Site

Human Considerations: Just off the A49 this is a bit of a hidden gem (or certainly is the car park we stumbled upon) An Ideal Dog stopping point we had a good 30 minutes walk but there were many paths leading off we didn't attempt as it was snowing very hard) Well maintained paths and free parking. A hot drink van would have been very welcome!

Doggy Thoughts: Ok this walkie came as a relief as I had been couped up in the car for longer than is fun for a puppy. It was snowing which made it all the more exciting!!! So great walkie for a stopping off place - Ball chuckerability was limited as the path is fenced in on both sides but B made up for it by making me snowballs instead. There is a stream running alongside part of the path - I wasn't allowed to paddle though as I was rapidly becoming a snow dog. If this was my daily walk then it wouldn't score too high as the running off and exploring is limited by fences but as some where to stretch furry feet it was more than acceptable!

Ball Chucker Points:

Busy Sunday Pup

Wowowowowo have had two walkies today even though it has been trying to snow - first we went the Upper Growley Wood circular, Ellie walked with B while P and I did some ball chucker and practised recall. Then B&P went shopping so Ellie and I settled in with our Kongs for a couple of hours. (hope you like the piccie of me and Ellie relaxing - not sure what is going on with Ellie's eyes though - SPOOKY!!)

Then B&P came home and asked if we wanted to go out again - Ellie thought she would rather snooze as her legs were a bit achey and so B&P and little old me jumped in the car and went up the beacon to investigate the walkie we had noticed yesterday down a little lane - Check out the Hart lane Walk under my walkie section - I really enjoyed it - especially when we sat looking at the view and I found a nice stick to chew!

I was very glad to get home to our nice warm house as even with my husky fur I was feeling a bit chilly as the snow set in!

Off to see if Ellie has left any tasty treat bits in her Kong.

Being Indiana 'Bones' Hughes

The Indiana Bones Interview!

Animal : Dog

Breed : Well now you have me! Technically I am a heinz 57 as B calls it - or in other words a cross breed but as it is trendy these days to give every mismatch a name I am a Labruskie - thats a Retriever / Husky cross to you and me!

Name : Indiana Bones or Indi to my friends. I am named if you must know after George Lucas's Dog Indiana who was also a Husky and from where Indiana Jones gets his name (well you did ask) P named me so I guess I should be thankful it was that straightforward - I live with two girl gerbils named after male mice!?!

Lives : In a place called Wigan which is in the North West of England.
Birthday : 18th August

Right or Left Pawed : yep Dogs favour one or the other too - I for the record am Left Pawed and so will always shake with that one first

Distinguishing Features : Got to be my funky white eyebrows - Lily keeps threatening to paint little black blobs in the middle of them so people think I have four eyes!!!

Worst Habit : Oh where to start - my current one is not letting B & P sleep at night cos I wake up and want a snuggle (poor B fell asleep on the settee last night cos I kept shouting). Apart from that I would have to say eating unmentionable things in the garden sometimes oops

Best Skill : Jumping - I am very very good at jumping - P says I have springs instead of legs!! I am also really good at chasing and retrieving Balls, Sticks and blowing Leaves!!

Favourite Activity : Hmm I have to say I do like playing with my Ball Chucker but slutching in mud and water has to come a close second (that is outside water - not BATHS!)

Ambitions : Soo many I am only a little pup you know - at the moment I would like to be able to open the treat jar by my self other than that - hmm catch one of those pesky fish in the pond (or as I like to think of it a puppy plunge pool!)

Best Toy : It depends what mood I am in - at the moment I am heavily into Ellie's Kong - it is so much nicer to chew someone elses toy isn't it!!
Best Weather : Of all the types I have so far experienced it has to be SNOW SNOW SNOW!! I do also like frosty mornings they make your toes tingle! I am not awfully keen on rain though it has to be said!
Favorite TV program : Well that depends on who I am watching with - I do enjoy It's me or the Dog and am often to be found watching that, if I am with P then it can be anything from Lost to Brainiac - while if I am with B then I am more likely to be watching Bones (good title dont you agree) or CSI

Think that answers all the questions for now - drop me a line if you want to ask me one - else I will update as and when I find new fun things!

Beacon Country Park - Hart Lane

Walkie Location: Beacon Country Park - Hart Lane Walk

Human Considerations: Free Parking, path is uneven and very muddy in places, great viewing place with benches where you can see right across to the welsh mountains

Doggy Thoughts: This is a good walk if just from the Mud point of view!! You wander down Hart Lane and come to the old ruins of a farm - not much left just some old ruins to scramble round. When we went it had been raining lots so there was plenty of little streams flowing to splash about it! After the farm you come out into a great big field which is just made for Ball Chucker action. B&P climbed up to the benches at the view point and after a few races up and down the big hill after balls I joined them with a good stick to chew - you can almost see Uncle Keith's house from here!

After we had sat for a little while we noticed the snow shower starting to fall so we set off again along the top of the hill, now we could either have carried on across another few fields to the car but instead we cut through the little wood which brought us out near to the dippy pond and the car park. It was rather boggy crossing this bit of the field - I didn't mind cos I have fluffy husky feet but P (who hates all things MUD!!) nearly lost his shoe in a particularily boggy bit - he was not impressed although B and I had a good laugh - dont tell him though.

Ball Chucker Points: [15/02/09] update at P's request - there was a hot tea van in the car park today that looks like it intends to stay there and so the ball chucker point is increased
